How can you cover all subjects with just a few teachers?

It’s a question we hear a lot — and it’s totally fair! In a typical high school, you might expect one teacher per subject, a bell schedule, and separate classrooms for math, English, science, etc.

But at Atlas Montessori High School, things are intentionally different — and in a really good way.

It’s Not “One Teacher, One Subject” Anymore

Montessori high school isn’t about dividing learning into rigid categories.
Instead, we use an integrated, project-based approach, where subjects naturally blend together — just like they do in the real world.

Our guides (teachers) are cross-trained in multiple areas.

  • A Humanities guide might work across English and History.

  • A STEM guide might blend Math, Science, and Technology into one rich learning experience.

Learning That Feels Like Real Life

There are no “math periods” or “science bells.”
Instead, students work on interdisciplinary projects like:

  • Building a business plan (math + writing + communication + research)

  • Designing a sustainable home (geometry + environmental science + economics)

  • Researching local history and creating a podcast (history + writing + media skills)

Students are given the tools and guidance to explore independently, with one-on-one coaching, small workshops, and regular check-ins from their guides.

We Also Bring in Experts — and Take Learning Into the City

What happens when a project needs specific expertise?
We bring in community partners and professionals — local authors, wellness practitioners, small business owners, scientists, artists — who can share real-world knowledge and mentor students on their journey.

And learning doesn’t always stay inside the classroom.
We take advantage of being in Vancouver by bringing the classroom into the city — whether that’s visiting a lab, observing city planning in action, or interning at a local nonprofit.

It’s not just about reading or memorizing — it’s about experiencing and applying.

It’s Personalized. It’s Purposeful. And Yes — It’s Enough.

With a small student group and two strong generalists, we can:

  • Create individualized learning plans

  • Support students in multiple subject areas

  • Offer flexibility that larger schools just can’t

And as Atlas grows, we plan to add specialists in areas like art, music, or foreign language. But in the beginning, having two multi-skilled guides — backed by a strong local community — gives students a more personalized, connected learning experience.

In Short:

AtlasMHS isn’t about teaching 7 subjects in 7 periods.
It’s about helping students explore big questions and meaningful projects that weave subjects together — with two teachers guiding them, and a whole city supporting them.
